The Malatestas: in the footsteps of the Rimini Lordship

The Malatesta itinerary is divided into 18 places of interest

Cesena, Biblioteca Malatestiana

When exploring the Malatesta Lordship, history textbooks tend to focus on their fundamental contributions to the urban development of Rimini and Cesena. Castel Sismondo and the Malatesta Temple in Rimini, together with the Ancient Malatesta Library in Cesena, remain everlasting monuments of their influence. However, the legacy of the Malatesta Lordship extends far beyond these historic centres, embracing the countryside, mountains and lands disputed with the Montefeltro Lordship.

The Romagna Renaissance project also highlights these lesser-known gems, discovering castles, abbeys and fortifications that offer a new perspective on the expansion and power of the Malatesta Lordship.

The Malatesta itinerary is divided into 18 places of interest, each of which offers a unique chapter in the history of the Malatesta family. It begins with Malatesta known as Mastin Vecchio, the progenitor, and continues through the most illustrious figures, such as Sismondo Pandolfo, until the end of the dynasty. Each site, although with different origins, allows you to chronologically follow the evolution and influence of the Malatesta family in the region.

Discovering these places means not only reliving the greatness of a lordship that has profoundly marked Romagna, but it also lets you immerse yourself in a historical and cultural heritage that continues to fascinate and inspire. The Malatesta itinerary is a journey through history, an opportunity to explore the magnificence of an era and the strength of a dynasty that has left an indelible mark over time.
