An evening combining history, scenery and the authentic flavours of local produce at the “Tesori Aperti Summer Edition 2026 – Monte Poggiolo”, an event dedicated to evening walks exploring our hills.
Evening walk in Monte Poggiolo
The walk’s destination is the Rocca di Monte Poggiolo, from where you’ll be able to glimpse, in the distance on the upper part of the hill’s northern slope, the archaeological site of Ca’ Belvedere – a site of international significance that provides some of the oldest evidence of human presence in Europe.
This brick fortress, with its irregular quadrilateral layout, rises above the vegetation like a jewel: the four cylindrical towers served as a military outpost; over the centuries, it was contested by various local lords, as from this hill it was possible to survey and control the surrounding papal plains.
Length: 6 km
Elevation gain: 150 metres

Guided tour of the Church of S. Maria di Ciola
Situated at the foot of Monte Poggiolo, but considerably older than the fortress that overlooks it. Probably already in existence in the 12th century, its origins are certainly linked to the founding of the rural settlement of which it was the parish church; for a long time it was linked, with varying fortunes, to the Church of Domiziano, until the latter, by then in ruins, was declared beyond repair by a bishop’s decree in 1763, and Ciola acquired its assets.
