The Municipality of Vigarano Mainarda is located between Bologna and Modena. Its territory is characterized by two major centers, Vigarano Mainarda and Vigarano Pieve dotted with hamlets and villages of Roman origin.
The name derives from the Latin Vicus Varianus, village of Variano, given to today's Vigarano Pieve, of possibly Roman origins, from which the town was divided in the 1600s. Then the name Mainarda, was added, taken from the name of an ancient noble family present in many towns in the eastern part of the Po Valley.
The appearance of Vigarano Mainarda is that of a typical agricultural village gathered around a square dominated by the elegant parish church.
The Estense Delizia della Diamantina stands in the area. The complex of buildings grew in successive stages, with many transformations and remakes carried out over the centuries according to the changing functions of the structure. The villa is developed on three orders, with twin windows. The tower, which ends in battlements, was remodeled in the 19th century and now features a marble balcony, resting on two columns, and over which a Moorish-style triple lancet window opens.
Close to the Ferrara-Bondeno bike route there is a quarry converted into a green area open to the public. This is the Vigarano Pieve Oasis, a splendid environmental landscape restoration, an open and evocative space equipped with play areas, a birdwatching turret, and refreshments. It is easily accessible from Ferrara by bicycle via the Burana bike path.
