Emilia Romagna’s fame as a land of sounds and singers is largely due to the proliferation of dance halls, iconic venues that have given voice to the emotions of entire generations and which provided the training grounds for many of the artists who would subsequently bring about the golden age of Italian songwriting.
These are very different spaces, sometimes converted from a family home, or even mobile dance halls that are put together for parties or festivals, with a wooden structure, a central pole to hold up a tarpaulin, a wooden dance floor made of segments that give the structure its polygonal shape.
Because the important thing was not the place itself, but how the venue was used, transporting anyone present to another universe, where they might meet a second family, friends, or even the love of their life. All of it strictly dancing to the beat.
The earliest recorded dance hall, the Capannone Brighi, was opened by violinist Carlo Brighi at the end of the 19th century in Bellaria (RN), but some venues still survive today, and remain real lodestars for thousands of passionate fans.
