Alfero, the largest and most populous hamlet in the municipality of Verghereto, is situated in a splendid valley, dominated by the Comero and Fumaiolo massifs, through which the Alferello stream flows, and framed by centuries-old chestnut groves, beech woods and fir forests.
The village will be dedicating two traditional events to the delicious autumn forest produce, the chestnut: two consecutive festivals taking place on Sundays 18 and 25 October.
The day begins at 12.30 pm with lunch at the stall.
Throughout the day there will be a street market, and in the afternoon food stalls offering roasted chestnuts, ‘cagnina’, traditional sweets made with chestnut flour and fried ‘ciacce’.
There’ll be plenty of entertainment too: musicians, jugglers, face painting and street performers who’ll liven up the village’s main street and the charming little Piazza Sant’Antonio.
Traditionally, throughout October, the whole village devotes itself to harvesting this delicious fruit in Alfero’s vast chestnut grove.
